AC-3 is the acronym for Dolby Digital Arc Consistency Algorithm or Audio Code No.3. It is a multichannel audio codec algorithm that compresses sound signals to lower bit rates by taking advantage of the frequency selectivity of human hearing, while subjectively preserving the quality of the original signal. AC-3 has been widely used in DVD movies, and has been one of the standard audio formats for HDTV.
