MP3 is an audio compression format being widely used over the Internet for music downloading. MP3 is the abbreviation for MPEG layer 3. It uses perceptual audio coding and psychoacoustic compression to strip inaudible and unnecessary information from sound signals. Though MP3 is still a popular format over the Internet, it now faces many competitors, such as proprietary formats AAC, WMA and open format Ogg Vorbis.
